History

Bream Bay and Waipu were the original landing places for Scottish settlers from Nova Scotia in 1853 and the town has kept its Scottish traditions strong. Waipu is known throughout New Zealand for its annual Highland Games held early in January. The event will be in its 137th year in 2008.

The Bay is served by three long established Surf Clubs at Ruakaka, Waipu Cove and Mangawhai Heads.

Coastal walkways and tramping tracks through New Zealand native bush into the Brynderwyn ranges are numerous and well marked. Native flora and fauna abound in the area, being actively preserved amongst the long established dairy farming landscape.
